Pitch
You're wrapping up your final year, and wondering what your best option is. Finance? Consulting? Graduate scheme at a large engineering company? Let us tell you why a startup might be your best (and most exciting and rewarding) option. Even if you don't join us at Thaleron, we hope that this encourages you to look at startups:
- Breadth - You'll work on EVERYTHING, across the full engineering lifecycle. This will help you understand what you most enjoy and where you may want to specialise in future. It also helps you build fundamental skills that will help you work collaboratively with other teams throughout your career journey. Who knows, you might even become a founder and build something industry-changing!
- Accountability & Outcome - Graduate Engineers are often rotated through a company's various functions, not spending enough time in any of these teams to see something through and get the satisfaction of building and testing something they've designed. At Thaleron, you'll be designing, developing, building and testing systems rapidly.
- Progress & Development - That breadth we mentioned above? In our view, that's the best way to develop as an Engineer during this phase of your career
Who Are We?
Thaleron is a driven team with significant financial backing developing an entirely new mechanical energy storage technology. We have proven it in the lab, and are now building our first scale prototypes. Our aim is not to just make a carbon-free grid cost-competitive with fossil fuels, but drastically cheaper. If we succeed, we will enable a 100% clean energy grid.
Our Team
We believe in small superstar teams, with high autonomy and responsibility. As a Graduate Mechanical Engineer at Thaleron, you’ll be joining a team of world experts, developing new concepts, rapidly building and testing to destruction.
Our team is onsite at least 3 days a week, creating an environment conducive to rapid innovation and seamless teamwork.
Your Role
You'll get a chance to see the inner workings of a venture-backed engineering startup building a revolutionary product with the potential to unlock the energy transition, and to learn how we operate and move quickly in spite of the constraints inherent to building very large hardware. You'll get the chance to start working on some of our challenges hands-on and to contribute ideas for solutions.
As you get to grips with everything we do, you'll start to:
- Design, build and test functioning prototypes by thinking creatively to find novel solutions that optimise for performance and cost.
- Quickly assess their feasibility and performance from first principles calculations.
- Iterate on designs in your head, reaching working solutions before formal design
- Design in CAD around the most suitable manufacturing methods
- Design and build test rigs with appropriate sensors to determine the performance of prototypes
- Assemble all the above and conduct tests
Candidate Journey:
1. Screen call - video call (30-45 minutes) - an introductory call with one of our team
2. On-site interview (60 - 120 minutes) - You'll come and meet the team in-person. We'll work through some design challenges and you'll be encouraged to ask us loads of questions to understand more about us!
