GA Drilling is developing next-generation drilling technologies to unlock geothermal energy at depths and in conditions that conventional drilling cannot reach economically. Our mission is to make geothermal a scalable, baseload source of clean power by enabling reliable, efficient drilling in hard, hot rock. With engineering teams in the USA, Brazil, the UK, and across Europe, we are progressing rapidly toward commercial deployment of our technologies.

We are seeking a mechanical engineer with a practical bias to perform mechanical design for downhole drilling systems and associated equipment related to assembly, testing, and maintenance. The ideal candidate will be equally comfortable working with established processes and procedures or helping to develop and refine new ones.

You will be based at our Brazil office in Rio de Janeiro.

The opportunity for you

You will be a core member of the operations team, working closely with Engineering, Manufacturing, Supply Chain, and Quality & Compliance to ensure drilling tools are produced, deployed, and maintained. You will have the opportunity to positively impact technology and processes as we move from prototype builds to commercial operations.

Responsibilities

  1. Mechanical Design & Analysis
    • Perform mechanical design and analysis of components and systems for drilling technologies and associated tooling and test equipment.
    • Develop high-fidelity, multi-domain (hydraulic, mechanical, control) dynamic models of actuation systems using tools such as Simscape and MATLAB/Simulink.
    • Perform stress calculations and analyze the impact of drilling fluid properties (viscosity, density, temperature) on hydraulic performance and response time, and use engineering judgement to recommend suitable design solutions.
    • Generate high-quality engineering documentation — drawings, calculations, procedures, and reports — and contribute to design reviews, technical risk management, and equipment integration and commissioning.
  2. Assembly, Testing & Field Support
    • Assist with equipment assembly, disassembly, maintenance, repair, and testing, including creating and refining the associated processes and procedures.
    • Diagnose and repair equipment failures, support failure reporting, and work with Engineering, Manufacturing, and Quality & Compliance to escalate and resolve technical or quality issues.
    • Provide hands-on support during builds, tests, and field deployments, and travel to field locations when required.
    • Support manufacturing, supply chain, and external suppliers to ensure seamless equipment deployment, and assist with project requirements, budgeting, timelines, and specifications.
    • Support a positive and proactive HSE culture, adhere to HSE regulations and quality procedures, and help maintain a safe, organized work environment (5S, housekeeping, waste segregation).

What we expect from you

  1. Experience & Technical Domain Knowledge
    • 5+ years of mechanical engineering experience, ideally within advanced engineering for complex industrial product development environments.
    • Strong grounding in mechanical engineering fundamentals, with experience in component design and manufacturing for industrial equipment.
    • Proficiency with computer-aided design and analysis applications (CAD, CFD, FEA).
    • Design justification experience via analysis and calculation — FEA, stress, and thermal calculations.
    • Working knowledge of relevant mechanical engineering standards and legislation.
    • Experience with equipment troubleshooting and report generation for complex mechanical or electromechanical systems.
    • Ability to work in both Portuguese and English.
    • Strong problem-solving, analytical, and critical thinking skills, with the ability to read technical documentation, drawings, and engineering specifications.
  2. Customer Interface & Cross-Functional Collaboration
    • Experience working with Manufacturing, Supply Chain, Quality & Compliance, and external suppliers to support equipment builds, deployments, and resolution of technical issues.
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to translate field and test observations into clear, actionable engineering feedback.
  3. Execution, Testing & Operational Excellence
    • High attention to detail, accuracy, and documentation discipline across drawings, calculations, procedures, and reports.
    • Demonstrated ability to work independently or as part of a team, executing project plans from high-level direction and delivering reliably against schedule and milestones.
    • Pragmatic decision-maker, able to weigh business priorities and contribute to root cause analysis, corrective actions, and continuous improvement driven by test and field results.
    • Ability to balance speed and rigor in fast-moving, technically challenging environments.
  4. Professional Mindset & Working Style
    • Hands-on, practical mindset with a strong bias toward action and problem solving.
    • Comfortable on the shop floor, in test environments, and at field locations as required, including travel.
    • Strong safety and quality focus, equally comfortable working with established processes or helping to develop and refine new ones.
    • Adaptable, resilient, and effective in early-stage and transitioning-to-commercial technology environments. Ability to provide and receive constructive, technically grounded feedback that improves product performance and reliability.

Nice to have

  • BSc or MSc in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline.
  • Familiarity with electromechanical fundamentals and the assembly, maintenance, and testing of complex electromechanical systems.
  • Experience with hydraulics, and with drilling tool design.
  • Interest in geothermal energy, drilling systems, or high-temperature downhole environments.

What we offer:

  • Opportunity to develop unique and innovative technological solutions which have the potential to change the world.
  • The satisfaction of solving challenges associated with making ultra-deep geothermal energy a commercial reality.
  • Be part of an experienced, global and highly motivated team.
