ELECTRICAL ENGINEER
GA Drilling Ltd
Other Engineering
Rio de Janeiro, RJ, Brazil
GA Drilling is developing next-generation drilling technologies to unlock geothermal energy anywhere on Earth. Our mission is to make geothermal a globally scalable, baseload source of clean power by enabling access to hard, hot rock at depths and temperatures that conventional drilling cannot reach economically. Our work demands mastery across electronics, hydraulics, mechanics, systems, control, and project management to create products that survive and perform in harsh, high-temperature, high-load downhole conditions.
We are seeking an engineer with 5+ years' experience in power-electronics design, testing, and manufacturing, as well as prototyping, operating, and debugging the associated test equipment. The ideal candidate will be equally well versed in design, analysis, and test.
You will be based at our Brazil office in Rio de Janeiro.
The opportunity for you
You will own the development of power-electronic hardware, analog and digital circuits, and embedded high-voltage systems for our downhole drilling technologies. The role spans schematic design, prototype bring-up, validation testing, and field support — working closely with mechanical, firmware, and systems engineers, and providing direct technical support to operations and drilling crews during testing and deployments.
Responsibilities
- Design & Development
- Develop power electronic hardware, analog and digital circuits, and embedded high-voltage systems and control applications.
- Create system block diagrams, schematics, wiring harnesses, and detailed electrical designs using engineering CAD software.
- Design and implement electrical stress tests (e.g., pressure, temperature, vibration) to ensure product reliability and durability.
- Look ahead at validation requirements, and develop and execute test plans and setups using both firmware and hardware debugging tools.
- Testing, Validation & Field Support
- Conduct prototype board bring-up, functional testing, and performance analysis.
- Troubleshoot electronic faults at the component and system level using diagnostic tools such as oscilloscopes, multimeters, and spectrum analyzers.
- Provide technical support to field service technicians and on-site drilling crews to resolve operational problems.
- Collaborate across mechanical, firmware, systems, and project teams on product development, testing, and failure analysis.
- Support a positive and proactive HSE culture and ensure that all activities adhere to HSE policy.
What we expect from you
- Experience & Technical Domain Knowledge
- 5+ years of power electronics engineering experience, ideally within advanced engineering for complex industrial product development environments.
- Experience with high-voltage transmission and protection, and motor control electronic circuits (motor drivers, position feedback) used in oil & gas drilling, electric actuators, automation systems, electric vehicles, and similar applications.
- Experience with DC-DC converters (Buck/Boost, Flyback) used in power supplies across industrial and consumer electronics, including permanent downhole installations for oil & gas.
- Experience with analog and digital filters used across transmission networks, radio, satellite, medical devices, and oil & gas sensors and signal monitoring.
- Experience with sensors found in industrial and commercial electronics, including permanent downhole installations for oil & gas.
- Proficiency with electronics simulation and CAD tools used to model, simulate, and design electronic devices.
- Ability to work in both Portuguese and English.
- Strong analytical thinking and ability to read technical documentation, schematics, and engineering specifications.
- Customer Interface & Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Experience working directly with operations teams, field service technicians, and on-site drilling crews to support testing, deployments, and resolution of operational problems.
- Strong communication skills, with the ability to translate field and test observations into clear, actionable engineering feedback.
- Execution, Testing & Operational Excellence
- Strong attention to detail with a disciplined approach to testing, documentation, and configuration control.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently, execute project plans from high-level direction, and deliver reliably against schedule and milestones.
- Experience contributing to root cause analysis, corrective actions, and continuous improvement driven by test and field results.
- Ability to balance speed and rigor in fast-moving, technically challenging environments.
- Professional Mindset & Working Style
- Hands-on, practical mindset with a strong bias toward action and problem solving.
- Comfortable working in the lab, on the shop floor, in test environments, and in the field as required, including occasional travel.
- Strong safety and quality focus, with respect for procedures while helping evolve them as systems mature.
- Adaptable, resilient, and effective in early-stage and transitioning-to-commercial technology environments. Ability to provide and receive constructive, technically grounded feedback that improves product performance and reliability.
Nice to have
- BSEE or MSEE preferred.
- Experience with embedded firmware development for high-voltage or motor control applications.
- Exposure to oil & gas, drilling, or downhole electronics qualification standards.
- Interest in geothermal energy, drilling systems, or high-temperature downhole environments.
