GA Drilling is developing next-generation drilling technologies to unlock geothermal energy anywhere on Earth. Our mission is to make geothermal a globally scalable, baseload source of clean power by enabling access to hard, hot rock at depths and temperatures that conventional drilling cannot reach economically. Our work demands mastery across electronics, hydraulics, mechanics, systems, and control to create products that survive and perform in harsh, high-temperature, high-load downhole conditions.

We are seeking a mechanical technician with 3+ years' experience in lab and field testing of mechanical and electromechanical equipment for downhole drilling systems, including assembly, prototyping, operating, and debugging the associated test equipment.

You will be based at our Brazil office in Rio de Janeiro.

The opportunity for you

You will own the hands-on assembly, testing, and maintenance of mechanical and electromechanical equipment for our downhole drilling systems — running functional and performance tests in the lab and supporting prototype bring-up, qualification campaigns, and operational deployments in the field. You will work alongside mechanical, electrical, and systems engineers, capturing test data and feeding it back into design and reliability improvements.

Responsibilities

  1. Lab Testing & Calibration
    • Conduct functional tests, performance evaluations, and calibrations on mechanical and electromechanical equipment to ensure compliance with quality standards and manufacturer specifications.
    • Set up and operate test equipment — pressure and temperature test rigs, hydraulic test benches, torque tools, dimensional metrology (calipers, micrometers, dial indicators), and data acquisition systems — to run characterization, qualification, and acceptance testing.
    • Diagnose and repair mechanical and hydraulic failures at the component and assembly level, including disassembly, inspection, replacement of worn or damaged parts, and rework of seals, fasteners, and fittings.
    • Support prototype bring-up and design iterations by capturing test data, flagging anomalies, and feeding observations back to mechanical and systems engineers.
  2. Assembly, Field Support & Documentation
    • Assemble, disassemble, inspect, and perform preventative maintenance on mechanical and hydraulic equipment (downhole tools, actuators, drillstring components, pumps, valves, and associated test fixtures) according to technical specifications and procedures.
    • Maintain accurate service records, calibration logs, and repair documentation, and generate clear reports on work performed and equipment status.
    • Provide hands-on support to field representatives and drilling crews during qualification campaigns and deployments, and travel to field locations when required.
    • Coordinate with other technicians, engineers, and field representatives to resolve complex issues, support failure analysis, and ensure seamless equipment deployment. Help maintain an organized work environment and manage inventory of electronic components, parts, and supplies.
    • Support a positive and proactive HSE culture, adhere to HSE regulations and quality procedures, and help maintain a safe, organized work environment (5S, housekeeping, waste segregation).

What we expect from you

  1. Experience & Technical Domain Knowledge
    • 3+ years of experience working with mechanical and hydraulic equipment, preferably in an industrial or oilfield environment.
    • Technical school certificate in mechanical technology, mechatronics, or a related field, or equivalent relevant experience.
    • Proficiency with mechanical and hydraulic test equipment (pressure and temperature rigs, torque tools, hydraulic benches), dimensional metrology instruments (calipers, micrometers, dial indicators), and hand and power tools.
    • Skilled in mechanical assembly and disassembly, including torque-controlled fastening, seal and o-ring installation, and alignment of rotating and reciprocating components.
    • Ability to read, understand, and interpret technical manuals, drawings, schematics, blueprints, and engineering instructions.
    • Experience troubleshooting and repairing mechanical and hydraulic equipment and generating clear service and calibration reports.
    • Ability to work in both Portuguese and English.
    • Basic computer literacy and familiarity with data acquisition and diagnostic software, plus strong problem-solving, analytical, and critical thinking skills.
  2. Customer Interface & Cross-Functional Collaboration
    • Experience working alongside engineers, field representatives, and drilling crews to support testing, deployments, and on-site troubleshooting.
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to capture lab and field test observations as clear, actionable feedback for engineering.
  3. Execution, Testing & Operational Excellence
    • High attention to detail and discipline in service records, calibration logs, and repair documentation.
    • Ability to work independently or as part of a team, executing assigned tasks reliably against schedule and procedures.
    • Contributes to root cause analysis, corrective actions, and continuous improvement based on test and field results.
    • Ability to balance speed and rigor in fast-moving, technically challenging environments.
  4. Professional Mindset & Working Style
    • Hands-on, practical mindset with a strong bias toward action and problem solving.
    • Comfortable on the shop floor, in the lab, and at field locations as required, including travel.
    • Strong safety and quality focus, with respect for procedures while helping refine them as systems and processes mature.
    • Adaptable and resilient in early-stage and transitioning-to-commercial technology environments. Open to giving and receiving constructive feedback that improves equipment performance and reliability.

Nice to have

  • Associate degree or higher in mechanical technology, mechatronics, or a related discipline.
  • Experience with downhole tools, drillstring components, or other oilfield mechanical equipment.
  • Familiarity with calibration management systems and qualification testing standards.
  • Interest in geothermal energy, drilling systems, or high-temperature downhole environments.

What we offer:

  • Opportunity to develop unique and innovative technological solutions which have the potential to change the world.
  • The satisfaction of solving challenges associated with making ultra-deep geothermal energy a commercial reality.
  • Be part of an experienced, global and highly motivated team.
  • Collaborate with the world’s top industry players.
  • Competitive industry compensation & benefits.
