Purpose of the job:
Act as the principal BHA and downhole tool engineering authority for the downhole tool design, with personal responsibility for overseeing best engineering practices across all technology programmes, sign off and review other mechanical engineers’ drawings, personally undertake some of the more complex design tasks as required and provide specialist engineering advice and mentoring in the Mechanical engineering discipline, leadership role in Design for Manufacturing with Supply Chain.

Your job will be:
Area: Programme definition & execution, design standards, reviews
- Ensuring that concept design and detailed design of downhole systems in all technology programmes are fit for purpose, integrated & optimized, affordable, and meet functional specifications and execution plan. Close cooperation with Technical Leads and Project Manager.
- Lead, execute engineering calculations for downhole tools to support design decisions
- Supervising more detailed analysis, e.g. where FEA, CFD or multi-body dynamic analysis is required
- Carry out, and where appropriate lead, FMEA and HSE analysis
- Manage technical dialogue with suppliers and external partners / customers
- Produce detailed component level and system level specifications as required by the business
- Specify validation test requirements
- Involvement in manufacturing, assembly and test of components
Area: Technical team mentoring and support
- Providing mentoring, technical support from time to time, supervising other designers or mechanical engineers during the design process, including peer-reviewing and checking designs created by other engineers to ensure compliance with standards
- Detailed interaction with scientists to understand system requirements and constraints
- Consulting with engineers in other disciplines to ensure that designs are compatible with other systems used in the product
- Working as part of a technology programme design team delivering detailed design
- Leading a critical Programme and technical meetings, overseeing the technical quality and standards for downhole tools design
Area: Complex design, troubleshooting
- Capable of taking on significant elements of the detailed design and more complex design tasks as required personally
- Troubleshooting problems with existing designs
- Capable of working on their own initiative, with minimal supervision
- Working remotely but available to attend site meetings, testing site investigation as needed
Area: Standards, risks identification, reports, lessons learned
- Ensuring appropriate and adequate design standards and practices are deployed and deliverables and solutions generated are safe, legal, and adequately underpinned.
- Ensuring functional technical, safety, and engineering risks are identified.
- Preparing reports on findings and recommendations based on testing results
Area: New technologies, product improvements, new tools
- Researching new technologies related to their field of work, such as drilling, downhole tools, or computer-assisted design and manufacturing
- Conducting feasibility studies to determine whether new products are viable or if there are better alternatives available
- Maintaining up-to-date knowledge of relevant industry standards, codes, and regulations regarding the engineering field in which they are working

- 15+ years of Mechanical Engineering inclusive 5 years minimum in Leadership roles
- Analytical thinking, Mechanical design , Team Leadership, Pragmatic and able to make decisions based on business priorities
- Education – HNC / HND / BSc / MSc / PHD / Chartered Engineer
